A Journey of Resilience

This Time Was Different – Sheelagh’s Story

In 1995, I survived a car accident caused by a drunk driver. My physical injuries eventually healed, but the impact on my brain lingered. Then in 2019, another accident made things worse, exacerbating my brain injury and leaving me with light sensitivity, mobility challenges, and memory impairments. Discovering the Brain Care Centre changed everything for me. Through counseling, support groups, and occupational therapy, I found understanding, acceptance, and peer support. Now, as a Learning and Development Specialist, I’m committed to ensuring others can benefit from Brain Care Centre programs. Your donation truly makes a difference in lives like mine.

A Story of Triumph

This November, Brain Care Centre mailed out our annual donation request letter, aiming to raise $10,000 this holiday season. Your support helps people like me.

In 1995, I was a passenger in a vehicle that was hit by a drunk driver. The accident left me with both physical injuries and a brain injury. At the time, I didn’t have access to programs like the ones offered by Brain Care Centre. While I eventually recovered from the physical injuries, I felt a deep lack of connection and understanding about how my brain injury was affecting my life.

Then in 2019, I was involved in a second motor vehicle accident. This time, the physical injuries were minor, but the impact on my brain was much more severe. I was left with light and sound sensitivity, mobility challenges, and memory impairments.

Thankfully, I found Brain Care Centre. Occupational Therapy and Assistive Device Training helped me better understand the effects of my injury. Through Counselling, I was able to process the grief of losing the “old me” and begin to accept the “new me.” Support Groups gave me a safe space to practice conversational skills and connect with others living with brain injuries. While no two brain injuries are the same, it was incredibly comforting to know I wasn’t alone. The peer support I received changed my outlook and made all the difference in my recovery.

“There’s no way I would be at the stage in my recovery that I am without Brain Care Centre services and staff.”

Today, I’m a Learning and Development Specialist focused on accessibility and inclusion. I hold a Master’s degree in Educational Technology and Design from the University of Saskatchewan and am now pursuing a PhD in e-Research and Technology-Enhanced Learning, focusing on the experiences of students with acquired brain injuries in online learning environments.

This past August, I registered for Move for Brain Care. The fundraiser gave me the opportunity to take shorter walks over a longer period of time, instead of trying to complete a 5 or 10 km walk in one day. My experience with Brain Care Centre inspired me to participate and give back, because I want to ensure these programs are available for others who need them.

“As someone who has been fortunate enough to take part in Brain Care Centre programs, I want to ensure that they are available for others like myself for years to come!”

Thanks to generous donors like you, I was able to access the support I needed—when I needed it most.

Brain Care Centre continues to play a big role in my life, and I’m proud to be part of this community. I’m even more grateful for the chance to give back.

Your gift of $50, $100, $250 or any amount you choose can help people living with brain injury get the support they need today. Every dollar donated goes directly toward helping individuals like me—and that truly makes all the difference.
